You Idiot! -- The First Book - Nate Gangelhoff 978-0-9816813-0-6
If you've ever wondered whether or not Hulk Hogan's rap album is any good, or if the anti-drug song recorded by the 1987 LA Lakers helped prevent kids from trying PCP, or if an obscure text called The Miracle of Psycho-Command Power can, as it claims, make you a new car out of bubbles, then you've found the right book. Way to go. Indeed, the answers to those burning unknowns and many others can be found inside of You Idiot: The First Book. Collecting the first four issues of the fanzine You Idiot, one issue of the fanzine Whiskey Plus, and a previously unreleased issue of each, the book tackles a slew of bewildering subjects in a brave, take-minimal-prisoners approach that will blow you away or at least cause you to shrug. Anti-drug video games, cartoons, pencils, rap songs, and comic books receive a critical look. Bizarre religious people who think that Satan is behind things like My Little Pony and DC Talk are examined at length. Vital topics such as cat astrology, drunken karaoke singers, and preachers who burn Journey albums are studied. Psychic predictions made in the 1970s are graded for accuracy. A message board devoted to He-Man toys is infiltrated. Bands rehearsing in a practice space are reviewed. Stuff like that. Nothing here is particularly groundbreaking, but it should make you think, or laugh, or at least think about laughing before deciding not to. (less)
