Evans, Matt - Senseless - TAPE SAR 008
Any fan of Asheville's favorite hardcore/punk band, Just Die!, may recognize the name Matt Evans, since 2006 he has been leading those motley "old dudes" as the guitar player. It might come as a surprise to some that he has, in the past year or so, began a well received solo project. It isn't a surprise to me, since Matt and I have had long chats about our love of more poppy and melodic music ala Samiam and Piebald.
Side A features Matt with his acoustic guitar and very little backing instruments of any kind. This material brings to mind One Line Drawing, Elliott Smith, and Joseph Arthur just to name a few like minded solo artists. Track 3, "Stranded" features Matt crooning with the likes of one Rebecca Flynt. I'm not sure who she is but she has a great voice that blends well with Matt on this duet.
The tracks are very emotional without making you feel like there is anything wrong with that. While all the tracks may not be about positive experiences, Matt's music exudes a positivity and honesty that you don't see a whole lot.
Side B is different all together. This side is labeled "Old Flings" which is the band Matt uses to play his solo songs in a different setting. Most of the same songs are present from the first side except for, "Merry Go Round" and "Honest" which are only specific to this release. These tracks bring to mind Texas is the Reason and Samiam as well as any other melodic punk or dare I say emo from that era.
